Case Western Reserve University

I am currently a Senior Bachelor of Science in Engineering candidate in Cleveland Ohio, pursuing a double major in mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering. My coursework has provided me with a strong technical foundation in engineering design and analysis and has given me the opportunity to strengthen these skills through a variety of hands-on project and laboratory courses.

Two of my favorite courses that I have taken during my time at CWRU have been Mechanical Manufacturing and Orbital Dynamics. In the former, students are exposed to a variety of manufacturing techniques and how to design for them, with the opportunity to actually inspect and discuss components produced by each in class. As part of the class, we were given our first independent design project, in which we had to propose and defend an idea for a consumer product and model it in Solidworks. Additionally, the class has a lab component where students get to practice machining and creating/reading orthographic drawings.

Orbital Dynamics presented a fascinating challenge, as we worked through how to derive and apply the concepts that govern planetary motion, spacecraft flight & attitude control, and transfer between celestial bodies. In addition to touching on my passion for space, this course so interesting because it felt like an applicable culmination of many of the things I had previously learned. As an example, one of our assignments asked us to fully design a mission to inject a satellite into a polar orbit of the sun, including launch from earth, departure from the parking orbit, a Jupiter gravity assist, and an orbital plane change.

Aside from my coursework, the most valuable things my Case education has given me are the ability to quickly absorb new information & adapt to new challenges, along with an appreciation of how the work of engineers fits within the broader context of solving problems and achieving an organization’s overall goals.
